Does ChatGPT send more website traffic than Google?
As of October 2026, no. ChatGPT referral traffic is a small, high-converting channel that equals less than 1% of Google organic sessions, according to an October 21, 2026 analysis by SEO consultant Marie Haynes covering 12 months of GA4 data from 100 websites. Google organic search still drove 27 times more conversions than all AI chatbots combined.
- AI visitors convert better: On the 55 sites tracking conversions, ChatGPT visitors converted at 13.8% compared with 3.02% for Google organic visitors.
- Google still delivers the volume: All AI chatbot referrals combined reached only 0.73% of Google organic sessions in the study.
- Google says GEO is still SEO: Google’s own guidance states that optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for search, so the fundamentals have not changed.
What the Marie Haynes Study Found
On October 21, 2026, SEO consultant Marie Haynes published an analysis she titled “GEO is a distraction,” as reported the same day by Search Engine Land. She reviewed 12 months of Google Analytics 4 data from 100 websites of different sizes, covering more than 145 million sessions, and compared referrals from ChatGPT and other large language models with Google organic search.
The headline finding: ChatGPT drove just 0.62% as many sessions as Google organic search. Adding every other AI chatbot raised that figure to 0.73%. Those percentages compare AI referrals with Google organic traffic only, not with total website traffic, which makes the gap even more striking.
| Metric | ChatGPT and Other AI Chatbots | Google Organic Search |
| Sessions compared with Google organic | 0.62% for ChatGPT, 0.73% for all chatbots | Baseline of 100% |
| Conversion rate on 55 tracked sites | 13.8% for ChatGPT visitors | 3.02% |
| Share of total conversions | About 1 for every 27 from Google | 27 times more than all chatbots combined |
| Growth trend | Exponential growth stopped in August 2025, then declined | Not measured in the study |
The conversion data adds nuance. ChatGPT visitors converted at more than four times the rate of Google organic visitors, likely because people arriving from an AI answer have already researched and decided. But the volume difference was so large that Google organic still produced 27 times as many conversions as every AI chatbot combined.
The study has limits worth stating plainly. It did not measure changes in Google organic traffic over the same period, and it did not break out ecommerce revenue. Other analysts noted that AI tools may influence buying decisions without generating a trackable click. Even so, it is one of the largest public datasets on AI referral traffic so far, and its direction matches what we see in client analytics.
Which businesses should rethink their AI search budget?
Businesses spending heavily on GEO or AI search packages while their Google rankings lag should rethink their budget first. That includes healthcare practices, local service companies, and B2B firms that depend on inbound calls and form fills, because Google organic search still drives most of the visits and conversions those businesses rely on.
The most common question we hear from practice owners this year is whether they should stop investing in SEO and start optimizing for ChatGPT instead. The data says that would be a costly mistake. A healthcare practice that ranks on page one for its core services and city gets far more calls from Google than it will get from any chatbot, and that will likely stay true through 2027.
Local businesses have the most to lose. Patients and customers searching for a dentist, chiropractor, electrician, or billing service near them still turn to Google, Google Maps, and the AI Overviews that sit inside Google results. Those AI Overviews are part of Google Search, so ranking well in Google is also how you show up in Google’s AI answers.
B2B companies should look at their own numbers before reacting. If your GA4 data shows AI referrals well under 1% of Google organic sessions, as the study found across 100 sites, your growth lever is still Google. If you see AI referrals growing in your own analytics, track them separately, but fund them in proportion to the leads they actually produce. Why Google Still Owns Lead Flow
Google’s own documentation explains why the fundamentals still win. Its guide to optimizing for generative AI features on Google Search, last updated in July 2026, describes AEO and GEO as terms you may see used, then states that optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.
The same guide tells site owners they can ignore tactics like chunking content, creating extra AI text files such as llms.txt, or chasing inauthentic mentions. Instead, Google points to unique, expert-led content that offers value beyond common knowledge, which it calls non-commodity content. That is the same standard behind its recent guidance on AI-generated content, which we covered in our post on Google’s AI content fact-check rule for healthcare SEO.
Google is also giving site owners more visibility and control inside its own ecosystem. Search Console’s generative AI performance report shows how often pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and on October 21, 2026, Google updated its Search documentation so the “Control what you share with Google Search” page now lists the Search generative AI control alongside the robots meta tag, data-nosnippet, and X-Robots-Tag. We explained how AI Mode is changing visibility in our post on Google AI Mode monitoring.
The signal is clear. AI search is growing, but most of it is happening inside Google. Businesses that build strong organic visibility in Google win both the blue links and the AI answers built on top of them.
What does the traffic gap mean for a real business?
The traffic gap means a business earning steady Google organic traffic would likely get only a handful of visits from ChatGPT in the same period. Even with ChatGPT’s higher conversion rate, Google organic search would produce dozens of times more leads, so pulling budget from SEO to chase AI chatbots usually reduces total lead volume.
Here is a hypothetical using the study’s ratios. Picture a multi-location healthcare practice that receives 2,000 Google organic sessions a month.
| Channel | Monthly Sessions | Conversion Rate | Monthly Leads |
| Google organic search | 2,000 | 3.02% | About 60 |
| ChatGPT referrals at 0.62% of Google | About 12 | 13.8% | About 2 |
| All AI chatbots at 0.73% of Google | About 15 | Varies by tool | Likely under 3 |
Even if your ChatGPT visitors convert at the study’s high rate, Google organic search delivers roughly 30 times as many leads in this example. If each new patient is worth $500 in first-year revenue, Google’s 60 leads represent far more value than the 2 or 3 AI chatbot leads, before counting the referrals and repeat visits those patients bring.
These figures are illustrative, not a forecast. Your traffic, conversion rates, and patient value will differ. The point is proportion. Before you shift dollars, compare the leads each channel actually produces in your own GA4 and call tracking data.
When we audit a new client’s analytics, we usually find the opposite problem from the one they expected. They worried about AI search, but their real leak was a site that ranked on page two for its main service, loaded slowly on mobile, or sent callers to a contact form nobody monitored.
How should businesses split SEO and AI search effort?
Businesses can balance SEO and AI search in seven steps that protect lead flow while staying ready for AI growth.
1. Measure AI referrals separately in GA4. Create a channel group for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and other AI referrers so you can compare them with Google organic.
2. Check your Search Console generative AI report. See which pages appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode before making any decisions about AI controls.
3. Prioritize rankings for your money keywords. Focus first on the services and locations that generate calls and booked appointments.
4. Publish non-commodity content. Share real experience, local detail, pricing context, and answers your competitors do not provide.
5. Strengthen your Google Business Profile. Keep categories, hours, services, photos, and reviews current, since local results feed both Maps and AI answers.
6. Fix technical issues that block crawling and conversions. Improve mobile speed, internal links, schema markup, and form or call tracking.
7. Review the channel mix every quarter. Shift budget toward AI search only when your own data shows it producing leads at scale.
This is the framework we use for the healthcare businesses we work with. We build organic visibility first, because it compounds month over month and does not disappear the moment you stop paying, the way ad clicks do.

Common GEO and AI Search Mistakes
The first mistake is buying a standalone GEO package while your Google rankings are weak. Google’s guidance says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO, so a package that ignores rankings, content quality, and technical health rarely moves the needle.
The second mistake is spending time on tactics Google says it ignores. Google’s AI optimization guide specifically lists chunking content and creating extra AI text files like llms.txt as things site owners can skip for Google Search.
The third mistake is opting out of AI features without checking the data. Google’s Search generative AI control removes a site from AI features across Search and Discover. Before switching it on, review your generative AI performance report to see what visibility you would be giving up.
The fourth mistake is judging AI search by conversion rate alone. A 13.8% conversion rate sounds impressive, but on a tiny traffic base it produces very few leads. Judge channels by total qualified leads and revenue.
The fifth mistake is publishing generic content and hoping AI tools cite it. Google rewards original, experience-driven content, and so do AI answers built on Google’s index. If your site reads like every competitor’s, our list of signs you need a new website may explain why it is not converting.
The sixth mistake is chasing every new AI platform at once. Start with the channel that already sends you the most leads, master it, then expand.
In-House Marketing vs. an SEO Agency
Many practices try to handle SEO in-house, usually by asking an office manager or front-desk lead to post content and update listings between other duties. That approach rarely keeps pace with Google’s updates, AI search changes, and the technical work that ranking now requires. Search Console, GA4, call tracking, and Google Business Profile each need regular attention, and when they slip, rankings and leads slip with them.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much traffic does ChatGPT send compared with Google?
According to Marie Haynes’ October 2026 analysis of 100 websites and more than 145 million sessions, ChatGPT sent just 0.62% as many sessions as Google organic search. All AI chatbots combined reached 0.73% of Google organic sessions. Google organic search still drove 27 times more conversions than every AI chatbot together.
Do ChatGPT visitors convert better than Google visitors?
Yes, in the study’s data. On the 55 sites that tracked conversions, ChatGPT visitors converted at 13.8% compared with 3.02% for Google organic visitors. However, because ChatGPT sent so little traffic, Google organic search still produced far more total conversions, which is what matters for lead generation and revenue.
Is GEO different from SEO?
Google says no, at least for its own search experience. Its guide to optimizing for generative AI features states that optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO. Google also says site owners can ignore tactics like content chunking and llms.txt files for Google Search.
Should my business opt out of Google AI Overviews?
Most businesses should not opt out without reviewing their data first. Google’s Search generative AI control removes a site from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative features in Discover. Check your Search Console generative AI performance report to see your visibility, then weigh the leads those appearances support before changing anything.
Will AI search replace Google for local businesses?
Not in the near term, based on current data. ChatGPT referrals stopped growing exponentially in August 2025 and declined afterward in the Haynes study, while Google organic search still dominated traffic and conversions. Local customers continue to rely on Google Search, Google Maps, and AI Overviews, which all draw on Google’s index.
How long does SEO take to generate leads?
Timelines vary by competition, location, and site condition, but LeadGenForce guarantees results for its SEO service: if we cannot get your phone ringing from organic search within 60 days, you pay nothing. New SEO clients are typically onboarded within 5 business days, and every engagement starts with a free audit and strategy call.
